16 Operette CDs from "Classics for Pleasure"
Author: Andrew Lamb, 15 August 2007
.
These inexpensive reissues joyously recapture the spirit of the musical theatre of fifty or sixty years ago – before the post-World War II American musical took control. As many as fifty musical shows are represented, in recordings that date from around 1960 (the early stereo era) and are astutely chosen from the HMV, Columbia and World Record Club catalogues. Original orchestrations are generally retained for the Victorian and Edwardian shows, with the more modern shows usually given specially made arrangements.
June Bronhill stars in no fewer than eight of the shows, while other significant performers are as varied as Kenneth Williams (almost out-mastering Noel Coward), David Hughes in Rose Marie, The Merry Widow and A Waltz Dream, Lawrence Winters and Ray Ellington in Porgy and Bess, Grace Bumbry and Elisabeth Welch in Carmen Jones, Elizabeth Harwood in The Mikado, Shirley Bassey and Dora Bryan in Show Boat, Gwen Catley in Edwardian musicals, Inia Te Wiata in Show Boat, Chu Chin Chow and The Desert Song, Jimmy Thompson and Jimmy Edwards in The Maid of the Mountains, Moira Anderson and Vanessa Lee in Ivor Novello excerpts, Edmund Hockridge and Bruce Forsyth in The Desert Song, and Thomas Round in Lilac Time and Song of Norway - not to mention impressive contributions from David Croft, better known now as the man behind Dad's Army, Are You Being Served? and 'Allo, 'Allo.
One of the happiest aspects of the series is the way in which more extended selections from familiar shows are mixed with briefer glimpses of less familiar but no less delightful ones. Veteran EMI reissues producer Tony Locantro has lovingly compiled the discs to give excellent value, with no CD lasting less than 74 minutes. Digital re-mastering and booklet production are well up to EMI's usual high standards, and there are detailed synopses and notes.
